Ringkasan Good to Great

Ingatkah waktu SD dulu?

Jim Collins saw inside of the black box of the Good to Great companies, and saw these facts, that Good to Great Companies :

  • Larger-than Life. Most of the CEO’s or (10 from 11 CEO) are coming from inside of the company.
  • No systematic executive compensation.
  • No long range strategic planning.
  • Technology is the accelerator of the ignition of the company transformation, and not the cause of the transformation.
  • Focus on not to do things and stop doing list rather than what to do things.
  • Mergers and acquisition have no role in igniting the transformation.
  • Paid lack attention on managing the change, motivating people and creating alignment .
  • Had no name, tag line, and launch program for their transformation .
  • Were not in great industries, some of them in terrible industry.

Then he designed a flywheel concept which is a process from building up to breaking through that has 3 stages, and each stages has 2 key concepts.

First stages:
Discipline people:

  1. Level 5 leadership
level 5 executive is built from 5 level of leadership
level 1 : highly capable individual : employee who can contribute through his
knowledge, talent, capability and so on
level 2 : contributing team member : an employee who can work actively with
    others in group setting
level 3 : competent manager : a manager who can organize people and other
resources to achieve the goal of the company
level 4 : effective leader : who can catalyst the vision and make it come true with
    the highest result
level 5 : level 5 executive : who has a blend of personal humility and professional will. A leader who can see outside the window not to the mirror when the company success , and the leader who can see the mirror not outside the window when it comes to the failure.
  2. First who…then what
Good to great company put the right people on the bus and bring the wrong people off the bus and then decide where to drive it.
One of the way is how to become rigorous:
    1. When in doubt, don’t hire- keep looking
Don’t stuck in one point and don’t give up, try another way to find the right people. A company should limit its growth based on its ability to attract enough of the right people).
    2. When you know you must make a people change, act.
The right person doesn’t need to be managed or lead or guided.
    3. Put your best people on your best opportunity not your biggest problem.
If you sell of your problem, don’t sell off your best people.

Level of Management Team

  • Level 5 Leadership
First who :after seating the right people on the bus,
then build a superior executive team
    Then what
Figure out the best path to greatness
  • A Genius with Thousand Helpers
    First what
Concept the vision, draw a map and develop the rail road
    Then who
Hiring a thousand of helper to make the vision happen

Second stages:
Discipline thought

  1. Confront the brutal fact
A Stockdale paradox : maintain your unwavering faith that you can or will prevail in the end, regardless the difficulties and at the same time confront the brutal fact of your current reality, whatever they might be.
  2. The hedgehog concept
    1. What you can be the best in world
This is about the understanding of what you can be the best in the world and what you cannot be the best in the world, even you don’t have to be the best in the world.
    2. What is your economic engine. Determine your denominator, something that has one greatest impact ( profit /x of y)
    3. What is your deeply passionate about. Do things that we can get passionate about.

Third Stages
Discipline action

  1. Culture of discipline
    1. Rinsing your cottage cheese.
Maintain or keep upgrading the effort or the greatest thing that already happened, and be more success.
    2. Built a culture not a tyrant.
    3. Fanatic to hedgehog concept
    4. Start stop doing listing

  2. Technology accelerator

Technology is a tool to accelerate the momentum after hitting the breakthrough and tied up with hedgehog concept, not because of afraid being left or fails behind.
